Domokur Architects worked with the Regional Sewer District environmental education specialists to transform a non-functional plaza at their corporate headquarters into a demonstration raingarden that exhibited sustainable stormwater management practices, utilized recycled materials and provided employees with a comfortable landscaped courtyard to relax and interact. Stormwater from a nearby entrance canopy was diverted to a meandering, rock-lined ‘stream’ surrounded with native plantings. Recycled materials were used in the construction and site furnishings. Interpretive signage will be added to educate employees and visitors to the variety of sustainable practices represented in the garden. Most of the construction was done by employees to save on labor costs. Construction was finished in 2009.
