Deerfoot Office and Staff Cabin
Deerfoot Lodge Camps approached Domokur Architects in 2015 to assess properties for a new camp in the southeast. This would allow them to expand their outreach and manage waitlists for the original camp in the Adirondack Region of New York, which has been building "godly men in a Christ-centered community through wilderness camp experience" since 1930. Domokur Architects provided Master Planning Services for the new camp in Glenville, NC in 2016.
After completing the initial development phases, including infrastructure and cabin villages, Deerfoot asked Domokur to lead the next phases of implementation for the design and construction of the camp office, staff house, basketball pavilion, and dining hall. Similar to the buildings at the camp’s Adirondacks location, built of traditional log construction, the design of the office and future dining hall incorporate log construction and detailing similar to the vernacular traditions of the Appalachian Mountains. Balancing economical design and aesthetics, the office is a seasonal building of hybrid construction, with logs and conventional framing, rustic material finishes, including exterior live-edge pine siding, log columns, rhododendron railings and interior pine ship lap, similar to other buildings throughout camp. In addition to the wraparound porch and administrative functions on the main floor, the lower level includes restrooms and storage, taking advantage of the grade change. Both the staff house and office were completed during the summer of 2020. Deerfoot has a long tradition of volunteerism and work-weekends with camp families and alumni. This was taken into account during design and construction, leveraging the skills of volunteers to build furnishings throughout the office and storage areas.
CSM constructed the office and managed the construction of the staff house.
Construction of the pavilion and dining hall are anticipated in 2021-22.
